Roblox Build Published 9,000 Games in Six Weeks. The Interesting Number Is 71

Roblox opened Build, its prompt-to-game tool, to users in New Zealand on 28 July. At its developer conference on 11 September the company gave the first real numbers, and the one that matters is not the game count.

Build is a tab inside the Roblox mobile app. You describe a game in plain language, and it returns a playable first version. You playtest it, ask for changes in a chat, and share it. Publishing needs an age-checked account for users 16 and older; creating is open to age-checked users 9 and up, and everything published still goes through Roblox's normal moderation before anyone else can play it. A base tier is free, with paid tiers for heavier users and no published prices. The tool runs on a mix of Roblox's own models and open-source models, and it shares a backend, the models and the chat history with Roblox Studio, so a project started on a phone can move to the desktop editor without starting over.

Roughly 9,000 games had been published through Build by the middle of September. Of the people who made one, 71 percent had never used Roblox Studio.

The 71 percent is the product

Read that as a recruitment number rather than a quality number. Roblox has spent two decades with a creation tool that most of its users never touched. Studio is a real engine, and learning it is a project. The prompt box reaches a different population, and on the early evidence it reaches mostly people who were not making games at all.

Roblox's own framing is careful here. Games made with Build go through the same moderation as anything else and are ranked by the same retention-based discovery rules. The company's line is that if nobody plays it, nobody can find it, so a flood of low-effort titles does not displace what already works. "Our discovery systems are designed to highlight games with long-term retention, which doesn't include AI slop," the company wrote at launch. The age gate matters on a platform this young, and Roblox has kept creation at 9 and publishing at 16 rather than opening both.

The cost side is less comfortable. Roblox guided third-quarter bookings down 14 to 18 percent, and attributes roughly half of the resulting margin compression to AI investment, mostly incremental cloud GPU spending. Build and a companion product called Moments are both in the same category: expensive infrastructure that the company expects to pay off later.

A ten-minute game, and what the model cut

A writer for Pocket Tactics tried Build on an iPad at the conference and asked for "a cyberpunk farming simulator with a cast of NPCs that I could befriend." In about ten to fifteen minutes it produced six NPCs, a six-plot neon farm and a seed-planting mechanic, and named the result Neon Harvest: Afterdark. It also explained what it had done, including shrinking the requested open-world city into a single building, which the writer read as a resource decision.

That is a small window into how these tools behave. The first thing the model does is reduce scope. A prompt-to-game system that accepted the full request would spend an hour generating a city nobody would see, so it makes the buildable version instead. It is also a preview of the skill the tool actually teaches, which is cutting an idea down to something a single person can finish.

The other thing worth noting is the clone filter. Asked how Build prevents games from copying existing ones, Kevin Swint, Roblox's senior director of product, said the system "constructively misdirects" users who ask for one. Any tool that turns a sentence into a game needs something like it, because a large share of people will type the name of a game they already like into the box.

The asset layer underneath

The chat box is only the front end. Build leans on Cube, Roblox's 3D foundation model for turning prompts into game-ready objects such as vehicles and weapons, and on procedural models that generate parametric 3D assets from text or images. At the conference Roblox added an asset library, desktop access and iterative control to Build, and promised a Scene Generator that turns text prompts and reference images into full layouts later this year, plus NPCs that can playtest a game on your behalf.

The list of features is a roadmap for a specific thesis. If a playable scene can be assembled from generated assets, and a playtest can be run by a generated character, then the human contribution moves up to direction and taste. That is the same claim every creative tool is making, and it is testable here in a way it is not in most places, because Roblox publishes hourly plays.

The quality objection

When Build was announced, the immediate objection was volume. A platform already carrying an enormous amount of user-made content would now receive games produced in ten minutes, and the worry was that discovery would fill with material nobody wanted. Roblox's answer is that discovery is already retention-based, so an unplayed game gets no distribution, and that the same moderation applies to anything Build produces.

The company also pointed to a countervailing trend. The top ten games accounted for 30 percent of Roblox hours in the second quarter of 2023 and 20 percent in the same quarter of 2026. Whatever else Build does, it is arriving on a platform that was already moving away from a winner-take-all shape, so the question is whether the new titles find a middle tier or collect at the bottom.

Where the volume actually goes

Roblox has already pushed AI to its existing developers through a separate set of Studio features. Adoption of AI tools among the top 1,000 and top 10,000 creators by Robux spent rose about 15 percentage points quarter over quarter, and use of the agentic Studio Assistant grew 20 percent sequentially. The features promised at the conference point the same direction: a playtesting agent that finds bugs, an analytics agent that answers performance questions in natural language, and an experimentation agent that recommends tests.

Meanwhile the concentration of play has been falling. The top ten games accounted for 20 percent of Roblox hours in the second quarter of 2026, down from 30 percent in the same quarter of 2023. Whatever else the AI tools do, they are arriving into a platform where the head is getting smaller on its own.

Build is expanding to Serbia and Singapore, with standalone app exports and a wallet that pays creators every business day, and Roblox added Hindi support across the platform, Creator Hub and Studio in the same period. The next numbers to watch are not published game counts. They are retention and earnings, which Roblox has not shared, and which are the only figures that will say whether a ten-minute game made by someone who never opened Studio can hold a player past the first session.
